Mr B and I travelled to Cheltenham in driving rain, spray everywhere on the motorway. He dropped me as close to the shop as possible as the rain lashed down on my unsuitable yellow dress, far too thin and summery for such horrible weather. But a very warm welcome awaited us in Cheltenham’s Waterstone’s – what a really lovely team of bookseller they are in there!
Jackie quickly moved furniture about to give me a larger table as I find it works best to spread the books out so people can pick them up and take a look. I also need space for my shiny new postcards, provided by Orion, and the badges I give to everyone buying a book. With all set up, Mr B and I spent the next few hours chatting to customers and selling many copies of Stonewylde books. It was lovely to see some more loyal readers who arrived in their Stonewylde T-shirts to do a stint at promo-pixie-ing. And despite the rain, the shop was really busy all day with a constant stream of customers. It seemed many were stocking up on summer reading and taking advantage of Waterstone’s “3 for 2” offer. Luckily all three Stonewylde books were included in the offer, so many people bought the trilogy for the price of two books.
The rain dried up, the sun came out and we had a wonderful time there. The staff really were buzzing, and I’d love to return to this exceptionally friendly and busy shop. Thanks to all readers who came in to see me – especially a girl whom I used to teach in primary school and who’s now at university. I hadn’t seen her since she was 10 years old – it was lovely to chat with her and such a relief when she said that she and all her family loved Stonewylde! Having taught her for a year, it would have been embarrassing if they’d not liked my books.
STOP PRESS: I’ll be back in Cheltenham Waterstone’s again on Saturday December 10th – come in and buy signed copies of the series for Yule presents.
